How Does a Porcelain Water Dispenser Work?
A porcelain dispenser has two parts. The top crock holds unfiltered water. This water passes slowly through a filter cartridge. Most models use a ceramic dome or carbon block. The water then drips into the bottom crock.
You dispense the filtered water through a tap at the base. There's no electricity. No mains connection. No plumbing. Just gravity.

Porcelain vs. Stainless Steel Benchtop Filters
Both are gravity-fed. Neither needs plumbing.
- Porcelain dispensers. A traditional, natural look. Made from lead-free, food-grade porcelain.
- Stainless steel systems. A more modern look. Usually more durable if knocked.
Filter performance depends on the cartridge, not the outer material. Both styles use similar cartridge types.
Timber Stands
Some porcelain dispensers come as a stand-alone crock set. Others come with an optional timber stand. A stand raises the dispenser, so the tap is easier to reach. It also adds a nice display piece to any room.
Stand size and fit vary by model. Confirm stand compatibility before you order.
Care and Handling
- Fragility. Porcelain crocks are ceramic. They chip or crack if dropped or knocked. Handle with care, especially when unpacking, installing, or cleaning.
- Cleaning. Wash both crocks with warm water and mild detergent. Don't use abrasive cleaners. Rinse well. Let them dry before you put the unit back together.
- Ceramic dome filters. Clean the ceramic dome once a month. Remove it first. Gently scrub the outside with a soft brush under running water. Don't use soap on the ceramic element. Replace the filter once a year, or sooner if cleaning no longer restores flow.
- Delivery note. Porcelain crocks are fragile. We pack them with care, but please check yours on delivery. Contact us right away if you find any damage.

What filter cartridge do porcelain dispensers use?
Most models use a ceramic dome filter in the top crock. Some models also take an 8-stage KDF/carbon/mineral cartridge. Check your model's product page to confirm.
How often do I need to replace the filter?
Clean ceramic dome filters once a month. Replace them once a year, or sooner if cleaning stops restoring the flow. Replace 8-stage KDF cartridges every 6–12 months, or after about 3,000–5,000 litres.
