Large Gravity Water Filters in Australia: How They Work and Who They Suit

September 13, 2024 2 min read

Large gravity water filters are one of the most practical home filtration options in Australia — no electricity, no plumbing, and effective multi-stage filtration. Here’s how they work and who they suit best.

See our Benchtop Water Filters Guide or browse our gravity filter range.

How Gravity Water Filters Work

A gravity water filter has two chambers — upper and lower. Water is poured into the upper chamber and passes through the filter cartridge by gravity alone, collecting in the lower chamber ready to drink. No electricity, no mains water pressure, no plumbing required.

Our benchtop water coolers use an 8-stage KDF cartridge that filters water through ceramic, activated carbon, KDF media, Maifan stones, and Prill Beads as it passes from the upper to lower chamber. This removes chlorine, heavy metals, sediment, and bacteria, while adding beneficial minerals and raising pH.

What Large Gravity Filters Remove

  • Chlorine and chloramines: Activated carbon stage
  • Sediment and rust: Ceramic outer shell (0.9 micron)
  • Bacteria: Ceramic filtration stage
  • Heavy metals: KDF media stage
  • Improves pH: Maifan stones and Prill Beads raise pH to 7.5–8.5

What they don’t remove: Fluoride, viruses, dissolved chemicals. For fluoride removal, see our Reverse Osmosis Guide.

Who They Suit Best

Renters: No plumbing, fully portable. Move it when you move.

Households wanting filtered water without installation cost: No plumber required. Lower upfront cost than an under-sink system.

Emergency preparedness: Works without electricity or mains water pressure. See our article on water filters for emergency preparedness.

Rainwater and tank water users: Effective for filtering clean rainwater from a well-maintained tank. For bore water or heavily contaminated sources, test first and call us on 1800 789 781 for advice.

Capacity and Sizing

Our benchtop water coolers hold 15–20 litres in the lower chamber — sufficient for a household of 2–4 people. Refill the upper chamber daily or as needed. Browse our gravity filter range for current sizing options.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a gravity filter take to filter water?

Typically 2–4 hours for a full upper chamber, depending on the cartridge type and how recently the ceramic was cleaned. Gravity filtration is slower than mains-pressure filtration — this is normal. Refill the upper chamber before the lower chamber empties.

Do gravity water filters remove fluoride?

Standard gravity filters (ceramic + carbon) do not remove fluoride. For fluoride removal, you need a reverse osmosis system. See our Reverse Osmosis Guide or call us on 1800 789 781.
