Benchtop water filters are one of the most practical ways to get clean, great-tasting drinking water at home. No plumbing, no installation costs, no waiting for a tradie — just filtered water straight from your bench. They've been a staple in Australian homes for decades, and for good reason.
But not all benchtop filters are the same. Ceramic, alkaline, gravity-fed, countertop RO — each works differently and suits different needs. Here's how to make sense of it all.
A benchtop (or countertop) water filter is a standalone filtration unit that sits on your kitchen bench. Most connect to your existing tap via a diverter valve, while gravity-fed models simply sit on the bench and filter water as it passes through under gravity — no tap connection needed.
They're ideal for renters, people who move frequently, or anyone who wants high-quality filtered water without permanent installation.

One of the most trusted filtration technologies available. Ceramic dome filters use a porous ceramic shell (typically 0.9 micron) to physically block bacteria, cysts, and sediment, often combined with an inner carbon core to remove chemicals and improve taste. They're long-lasting, effective, and don't require electricity.
Our ceramic twin countertop systems — including models with Doulton Sterasyl ceramic elements — are among our most popular products for households that want reliable, no-fuss filtration.
These filter your water and raise its pH level, typically to between 8 and 9.5. The alkalising stage involves mineral stones or a remineralisation cartridge that adds calcium, magnesium, and other trace minerals back into the water. Many people find alkaline water tastes noticeably smoother than standard tap water.
See our benchtop alkaline water purifier range.
Our signature filtration system. The 8-stage process combines KDF media, activated carbon, ceramic, Maifan mineral stones, and Prill Beads to address a wide range of contaminants while adding beneficial minerals and raising pH to 7.5–8.5. These are the filters used with our water cooler range and are available as standalone benchtop units.

The most thorough filtration available in a benchtop format. Countertop RO systems connect to your tap and push water through a semi-permeable membrane, removing up to 99% of dissolved contaminants including fluoride, heavy metals, and bacteria. No permanent installation required.

These don't connect to your tap at all — you pour water into the top chamber and gravity pulls it through the filter into the lower chamber. Completely portable, no electricity, no plumbing. Great for camping, caravanning, or use in areas without reliable tap access.
This varies by filter type, but most quality benchtop filters will address:
Ceramic domes typically last 6–12 months and can be cleaned multiple times before replacement — scrub the outer surface monthly with a soft brush to restore flow rate. Carbon cartridges generally need replacing every 6 months. Our countertop filter cartridges are available for all the systems we sell.
Neither is universally better — it depends on your situation. Benchtop filters are portable, require no installation, and are easy to maintain. Under-sink filters are hidden away, don't take up bench space, and often have higher flow rates. If you rent or move frequently, benchtop wins. If you own your home and want a permanent solution, under-sink is worth considering. See our under-sink water filter range.
Standard carbon and ceramic filters don't remove significant amounts of fluoride. For fluoride reduction, our 7-stage fluoride reduction filters are designed specifically for this, or a countertop RO system will remove up to 96% of fluoride. See our Reverse Osmosis Guide.
Yes — that's one of their biggest advantages. Unscrew the diverter valve from your tap, pack it up, and reconnect it at your new place. Takes about 2 minutes.
Most manufacturers give a lifespan in litres or months. A practical sign is when the flow rate slows noticeably or the taste of the water changes. Don't wait until the water tastes bad — replace on schedule. Browse our replacement cartridge range.
