Water Cooler Filter Types Explained: Which One Do You Need?

April 14, 2019 2 min read

If you own a water cooler or are thinking about buying one, understanding the filter options is important. The filter is what separates a water cooler that delivers genuinely clean water from one that just chills tap water. Here's a breakdown of the main filter types available for Australian water coolers.

For more detail on replacement cartridges, see our Replacement Filter Cartridges Guide or browse our full replacement cartridge range. Also see our Water Coolers Guide and Benchtop Water Filters Guide.

8-Stage KDF Filter (Most Popular)

Our 8-stage KDF water filter is the most comprehensive option for bottle-fed water coolers. It combines ceramic (0.9 micron), KDF media, activated carbon, Maifan mineral stones, Prill Beads, and bio ceramic balls to remove chlorine, heavy metals, bacteria, and sediment, while adding trace minerals and raising pH to 7.5–8.5.

Best for: most Australian households on town water. Replace every 6–12 months.

Ceramic Filter

Ceramic filters use a porous ceramic shell (typically 0.9 micron) to physically block bacteria, cysts, and sediment. They're effective against biological contaminants but don't address chemical contaminants like chlorine or heavy metals on their own. Usually used as the first stage in a multi-stage system.

Activated Carbon Filter

Activated carbon is highly effective at removing chlorine, chloramines, VOCs, and taste/odour compounds. It works through adsorption — contaminants stick to the carbon's enormous surface area as water passes through. Most multi-stage filters include at least one activated carbon stage.

Inline Filters (for Plumbed-In Coolers)

Plumbed-in bottleless coolers use inline filters that connect directly to your mains water supply. These typically use a combination of sediment and carbon filtration and need replacing every 6–12 months. Browse our plumbed-in cooler range for compatible options.

How Often Should You Replace Your Water Cooler Filter?

Most water cooler filters need replacing every 6–12 months. Signs it's time: returning chlorine taste or smell, reduced flow, or visible sediment. Don't push past 12 months — old carbon filters can harbour bacteria. Browse our replacement cartridge range or call us on 1800 789 781 if you're not sure which cartridge fits your cooler.
