DIY Water Filter Cartridge Cleaning: Tips and Tricks

July 03, 2023 2 min read

Some water filter cartridges can be cleaned to extend their life — but not all of them, and not indefinitely. Here's what actually works, what doesn't, and when cleaning is a waste of time.

What You Can Clean

Replacement Dome for Ceramic and Sediment Filter

Ceramic Dome Filters

The ceramic outer stage of an 8-stage KDF cartridge or standalone ceramic dome can be cleaned to restore flow rate. The ceramic pores become blocked with sediment and bacteria over time — scrubbing the outer surface removes the blocked layer and exposes fresh ceramic underneath.

How to clean a ceramic dome:

  1. Remove the ceramic dome from the cartridge or housing
  2. Hold it under running water
  3. Scrub the outer surface gently with a soft-bristle brush or the rough side of a kitchen sponge — no soap or chemicals
  4. Rinse thoroughly
  5. Reinstall

You can clean a ceramic dome 3–4 times before it becomes too thin to be effective. Once the dome is noticeably thinner or develops cracks, replace it. Browse our replacement cartridges.

Filter Housings and Reservoirs

The housing or reservoir that holds the cartridge should be cleaned every 3–6 months. Use a diluted bleach solution (1 tablespoon of unscented bleach in 4 litres of water), wipe the interior, then rinse thoroughly with fresh water. See our full guide: How to Clean a Water Cooler.

What You Cannot Clean

Activated carbon media cannot be regenerated at home. Once the carbon is saturated with chlorine, VOCs, and organic compounds, it's exhausted — scrubbing or rinsing won't restore its adsorption capacity. The same applies to KDF media and mineral stages. These must be replaced, not cleaned.

Attempting to clean an exhausted carbon cartridge and continuing to use it is counterproductive — a saturated carbon filter can release trapped contaminants back into your water.

When to Replace Instead of Clean

  • The cartridge is 12+ months old regardless of cleaning history
  • Flow rate remains slow after cleaning the ceramic stage
  • Chlorine taste or smell has returned
  • The ceramic dome is visibly thinner or cracked
  • The water tastes or smells different from when the cartridge was new

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I clean my ceramic dome?

Monthly scrubbing under running water is ideal for maintaining flow rate. A full clean with inspection every 3 months. Replace the cartridge every 6–12 months regardless of cleaning history.

Can I use soap to clean my filter cartridge?

No — soap can contaminate the filter media and is very difficult to rinse out completely. Use only clean running water and a soft brush for the ceramic stage. For the housing and reservoir, use diluted unscented bleach solution, then rinse thoroughly.

My flow rate is slow even after cleaning. What should I do?

If flow rate remains slow after scrubbing the ceramic dome, the cartridge is likely exhausted and needs replacing. Browse our replacement cartridge range or call us on 1800 789 781.
