Most water filter maintenance is genuinely DIY-friendly. Here’s what you can do yourself and what to leave to a plumber.

What You Can Do Yourself

Cartridge replacement (all filter types): Benchtop, under-sink, shower, and whole house cartridge replacement is DIY-friendly. For under-sink filters, close the inlet shut-off valve, relieve pressure, swap the cartridge, and restore flow. See our Under Sink Water Filters Guide for step-by-step instructions.

Ceramic dome scrubbing: The outer ceramic shell of a ceramic dome filter can be scrubbed with a soft brush under running water to restore flow rate. Do this monthly or when flow reduces noticeably.

Reservoir cleaning (benchtop and cooler systems): Clean the reservoir every 3–6 months with a mild food-safe sanitiser. Rinse thoroughly before refilling.

O-ring inspection and replacement: Check the O-ring on filter housings when replacing cartridges. Clean and apply food-grade silicone grease. Replace if cracked or damaged.

Leak checks: Check all connection points monthly. Tighten loose fittings by hand.

What to Leave to a Plumber

Water line connections: If a leak is coming from a pressurised water line fitting (not the filter housing), turn off the water supply and call a licensed plumber. Do not attempt to repair pressurised water line fittings yourself.

RO system installation: Initial installation of an under-sink RO system involves connecting to the cold water supply and (usually) a drain line. A plumber is recommended for the initial installation.
