How to Test Your Water for Fluoride in Australia

Before investing in a fluoride filter, it’s worth knowing how much fluoride is actually in your water. Here’s how to find out.

Option 1: Check Your Water Utility’s Annual Report (Free, Easiest)

In Australia, all town water suppliers are required to publish annual water quality reports. These reports include fluoride levels, chlorine levels, and other key parameters. Search for your water utility’s name plus “water quality report” — most are available on the utility’s website. This is the most reliable starting point for most Australian households on town water.

Most Australian town water is fluoridated to approximately 0.6–1.0 mg/L — within the range recommended by the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines.

Option 2: At-Home Fluoride Test Kits

At-home fluoride test kits use colorimetric test strips or drops that change colour in the presence of fluoride. They give a rough indication of fluoride concentration — useful for confirming whether your filter is working (test before and after filtration) but less accurate than laboratory testing.

Pros: affordable, quick results, available from hardware and pool supply stores.
Cons: less accurate than lab testing, typically only tests for fluoride.

Option 3: Professional Laboratory Testing

For bore water, tank water, or if you want a comprehensive analysis of your water quality, a professional laboratory test is the most accurate option. NATA-accredited laboratories across Australia offer water testing services — you collect a sample and mail it in, or arrange a site visit. Results typically include fluoride, heavy metals, bacteria, pH, and other parameters.

Pros: highly accurate, comprehensive, expert interpretation.
Cons: costs more, takes longer (typically 5–10 business days).

After Testing: Which Filter Do You Need?

If your water contains fluoride and you want to remove it, the effective options are reverse osmosis or activated alumina. Standard carbon, KDF, and ceramic filters do not remove fluoride. See our guide: Which Filters Actually Remove Fluoride?

Frequently Asked Questions

How much fluoride is in Australian town water?

Most Australian states fluoridate town water to approximately 0.6–1.0 mg/L. Check your local water utility’s annual water quality report for your specific area’s fluoride level.

How do I test whether my fluoride filter is working?

Use an at-home fluoride test kit — test your tap water before the filter and after. A significant reduction confirms the filter is working. Replace the cartridge on schedule (every 6–12 months) to maintain performance. Browse our replacement fluoride cartridges.
