Maintaining Your Water Cooler: Tips and Tricks for Longevity

April 13, 2023 3 min read

A water cooler is a long-term investment — and like any appliance, it rewards the people who look after it. A well-maintained cooler delivers clean, great-tasting water for years. A neglected one can harbour bacteria, develop leaks, and fail prematurely. Here’s a practical maintenance routine that takes less time than you’d think.

For more on choosing the right cooler, see our Water Coolers Guide. For replacement parts and cartridges, browse our water cooler spare parts and replacement cartridge range.

Your Water Cooler Maintenance Schedule

Weekly — Wipe Down the Exterior

Unplug the cooler and wipe down the exterior with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Pay particular attention to the area around the taps — drips and finger contact make these spots a magnet for grime. Dry thoroughly before plugging back in.

Fortnightly — Clean the Drip Tray

Remove the drip tray, wash with warm soapy water, rinse thoroughly, and let it air dry before replacing. A full drip tray is a breeding ground for bacteria and mould — don’t let it sit.

Every 6–12 Months — Replace the Filter Cartridge

If your cooler uses an 8-stage KDF filter, replace it every 6–12 months depending on your water quality and usage. Signs it’s time: returning chlorine taste, reduced flow, or visible sediment. Browse our replacement cartridge range to find the right one for your model.

Every 3–6 Months — Sanitise the Reservoir

This is the most important maintenance task and the one most people skip. Here’s how to do it properly:

  1. Unplug the cooler and remove the water bottle.
  2. Mix a sanitising solution: 1 tablespoon of unscented bleach per 4 litres of water.
  3. Remove the baffle and lid from the reservoir and clean with the solution. Rinse thoroughly.
  4. Pour the sanitising solution into the reservoir and let it sit for 5 minutes.
  5. Drain through both hot and cold taps into a bucket.
  6. Refill with clean water and drain again. Repeat 2–3 times until all bleach smell is gone.
  7. Reassemble, install a fresh water bottle, and plug back in.

Additional Tips to Extend Your Cooler’s Life

  • Check for leaks regularly — water pooling at the base or dripping taps should be addressed promptly. Check our spare parts range for replacement taps and O-rings.
  • Keep the area clear — leave at least 10cm clearance around the unit for airflow. Don’t store items on top of the cooler.
  • Use a surge protector — protects the electrical components from power spikes, particularly important in older Australian homes.
  • Store correctly if not in use — drain fully, sanitise, and store in a cool dry place away from direct sunlight.
  • Replace the water bottle promptly — don’t leave an empty bottle on the cooler. Stagnant water in the reservoir encourages bacterial growth.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I sanitise my water cooler?

Every 3–6 months is the recommended interval. If you notice any off taste or smell in the water, sanitise immediately regardless of when you last did it.

Can I use vinegar instead of bleach to sanitise?

White vinegar is a milder alternative and works reasonably well for general cleaning. For a thorough sanitisation — particularly if you suspect bacterial growth — diluted unscented bleach is more effective. Always rinse thoroughly afterwards.

My water cooler has a strange taste after cleaning. What should I do?

Flush more water through both taps — at least 5–10 litres. If the taste persists, it’s likely residual bleach. Run another full rinse cycle. If the taste is still there after that, replace the filter cartridge.
