Shower Filter Maintenance: How to Keep Your Filter Performing

A shower filter is low-maintenance — but a neglected one stops working. Here’s a simple routine to keep yours performing properly.

Maintenance Schedule

Task Frequency
Clean the filter screen Monthly
Check for leaks at connections Monthly
Replace filter cartridge Every 6–12 months

1. Replace the Cartridge on Schedule

This is the most important task. Sprite shower filter cartridges need replacing every 6–12 months depending on usage and water quality. In harder water areas (Perth, Adelaide), replace closer to 6 months. Signs it’s overdue: returning chlorine smell in the shower, reduced water pressure through the filter.

2. Clean the Filter Screen

Most shower filters have a small inlet screen that catches sediment before it reaches the filter media. Check it monthly — remove the screen and rinse under running water, using a soft brush to clear any mineral deposits. A blocked screen reduces water pressure noticeably.

3. Descale the Filter Housing

In hard water areas, mineral deposits can build up on the outside of the filter housing and at connection points. Wipe down with a diluted white vinegar solution (50/50 with water) monthly to prevent build-up. Don’t use abrasive cleaners on chrome or brushed nickel finishes.

4. Check Connections for Leaks

A monthly visual check takes 30 seconds. Look for drips at the wall connection and at the shower head connection. If you find a drip, unscrew the connection, rewrap the threads with Teflon tape, and retighten. See: How to Install a Shower Filter.
