Fluoride Water Filters in Australia: Which Systems Actually Remove Fluoride?

August 07, 2023 2 min read

Not all water filters remove fluoride — and this is one of the most common points of confusion when buying a filter in Australia. Here’s a clear guide to which technologies actually work.

See our Reverse Osmosis Water Filters Guide or browse our fluoride removal filter range.

Which Filters Remove Fluoride?

Reverse Osmosis (RO) — most effective. RO forces water through a semi-permeable membrane with pores small enough to block fluoride ions. Typically removes 90–99% of fluoride. This is the most reliable method for fluoride removal. See our Reverse Osmosis Guide.

Activated Alumina — effective for gravity systems. A porous aluminium oxide media that chemically adsorbs fluoride ions. Used in our 97% Fluoride Reduction Ceramic Dome and the UltraCeram Fluoride & Chloramines Removal Cartridge. Effective when water flow is slow and steady, as in gravity-fed benchtop systems.

Bone Char Carbon — partial removal. A natural media derived from animal bones that adsorbs fluoride. Less consistent than activated alumina or RO, but an option for those seeking a more natural filtration approach.

Which Filters Do NOT Remove Fluoride?

This is important: standard activated carbon filters, KDF filters, ceramic filters, and sediment filters do not remove fluoride. This includes our 8-stage KDF water cooler cartridge — it removes chlorine, heavy metals, sediment, and bacteria, but not fluoride. If fluoride removal is your priority, you need an RO system or an activated alumina cartridge.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the 8-stage KDF water cooler filter remove fluoride?

No — the 8-stage KDF cartridge removes chlorine, heavy metals, sediment, and bacteria, but not fluoride. For fluoride removal, you need an RO system or an activated alumina cartridge. Call us on 1800 789 781 for advice.

What is the most effective way to remove fluoride from drinking water in Australia?

Reverse osmosis is the most effective method, typically removing 90–99% of fluoride. See our Reverse Osmosis Guide or call us on 1800 789 781.
