What Do Shower Filters Actually Remove? An Honest Guide for Australians

January 23, 2024 2 min read

Shower filter marketing can be confusing — some products claim to remove everything, others are vague about what they actually do. Here’s a straight answer for Australian households.

What Shower Filters Remove

Free chlorine: ✅ Effectively removed by KDF and Vitamin C media. This is the primary function of a shower filter and the most well-supported benefit.

Chloramines: ✅ Removed by Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) media. KDF is less effective against chloramines. Important in areas where your water utility uses chloramines instead of free chlorine — check your annual water quality report.

Sediment: ✅ Most shower filters include a sediment stage that removes visible particles and rust.

Heavy metals (lead, copper): ⚠️ Some KDF media has limited effectiveness against certain heavy metals, but shower filters are not designed or rated for heavy metal removal. For heavy metal removal, a whole-house filter is more appropriate. See our Whole House Water Filters Guide.

Fluoride: ❌ Shower filters do not remove fluoride.

Bacteria: ❌ Shower filters do not remove bacteria. Australian town water is already treated to safe bacterial levels.

What Shower Filters Don’t Do

Shower filters do not “detoxify”, “boost immunity”, or provide dramatic health transformations. The genuine benefits are: reduced chlorine/chloramine exposure, less skin and hair dryness, and elimination of the chlorine smell from shower steam. These are real and worth having.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a shower filter remove heavy metals?

Shower filters are not designed for heavy metal removal. For heavy metal removal from all household water, a whole-house filter is more appropriate. See our Whole House Water Filters Guide or call us on 1800 789 781.
