Fluoride Water Filter Installation in Australia: What’s DIY and What Needs a Plumber

August 10, 2023 2 min read

The installation complexity of a fluoride water filter depends entirely on the type of system. Some take 5 minutes with no tools; others require a licensed plumber. Here’s a clear breakdown.

DIY-Friendly: No Plumber Required

Gravity benchtop systems with fluoride cartridges — the simplest option. Place on the bench, install the cartridge, fill the top chamber with tap water, and gravity does the rest. Our 97% Fluoride Reduction Ceramic Dome and UltraCeram Fluoride & Chloramines Removal Cartridge are designed for gravity systems. No plumbing, no tools, fully portable.

Benchtop RO systems — some countertop RO units connect to your tap via a diverter valve. No permanent plumbing. See our RO Guide for options.

Plumber Recommended

Under-sink RO systems — require connecting to your cold water supply line under the sink and installing a dedicated filtered water tap. A competent DIYer can manage this, but a licensed plumber is recommended to ensure the connection is correct and your warranty is maintained.

Whole-house fluoride systems — require connection to the mains water line. A licensed plumber is required in most Australian states. This is a legal requirement, not just a recommendation.

Australian Plumbing Regulations

In most Australian states, any work involving cutting into or connecting to a pressurised mains water line must be done by a licensed plumber. For gravity benchtop systems and countertop units, no plumbing is involved — these are fully DIY. For under-sink and whole-house systems, use a licensed plumber.

First Use: Pre-Soaking Fluoride Cartridges

Activated alumina cartridges (including our Ceramic Dome and UltraCeram) should be soaked in clean water for 15–30 minutes before first use, then flushed for several minutes. This activates the media and clears any manufacturing dust. Follow the instructions included with your cartridge.
