Fluoride Water Filter Maintenance: How to Keep Your System Performing

August 11, 2023 2 min read

Fluoride filter media saturates over time — once full, it stops removing fluoride entirely. Regular maintenance is non-negotiable. Here’s what to do and when.

Maintenance Schedule by System Type

System Task Frequency
Ceramic Dome / UltraCeram cartridge Replace cartridge Every 6–12 months
Ceramic Dome outer shell Scrub outer surface Monthly
Gravity system reservoir Clean and sanitise Every 3–6 months
RO membrane Replace Every 2–3 years
RO pre/post carbon filters Replace Every 6–12 months

Ceramic Dome and UltraCeram: Key Maintenance Points

Replace on schedule, not on symptoms. Activated alumina media saturates gradually — there’s no taste change or visible sign when it’s exhausted. Once saturated, it provides zero fluoride removal. Set a calendar reminder when you install a new cartridge.

Scrub the outer ceramic surface monthly. The outer ceramic shell physically filters bacteria and sediment. Over time, a biofilm layer builds up on the surface, reducing flow rate. Scrub gently with a soft brush under running water — do not use soap or detergent. This restores flow and extends cartridge life.

Pre-soak new cartridges before first use. Soak in clean water for 15–30 minutes, then flush for several minutes before drinking. This activates the media and clears manufacturing dust.

RO System Maintenance

Replace pre and post carbon filters every 6–12 months. The RO membrane itself lasts 2–3 years under normal use. A noticeable drop in filtered water production rate is the main sign the membrane needs replacing. See our RO Guide for more detail.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know when my fluoride cartridge needs replacing?

Replace every 6–12 months regardless of symptoms — there is no reliable taste or visual indicator when activated alumina media is exhausted. Browse our replacement fluoride cartridges.

Can I clean and reuse my fluoride cartridge?

The outer ceramic shell can be scrubbed to restore flow rate. The internal activated alumina media cannot be regenerated at home — once saturated, the cartridge must be replaced. Call us on 1800 789 781 for advice.
