Hot Water Dispenser Safety Tips for Australian Homes

June 22, 2023 2 min read

Hot water at 92°C is genuinely useful — but it demands a bit of respect, especially in households with young children or elderly family members. These practical tips will help you use your dispenser safely every day.

1. Always Use the Child-Safe Hot Tap Lock

All our dispensers include a mechanical child-safe lock on the hot tap. Make sure it’s engaged when the dispenser is unattended. Teach children that the hot tap is off-limits — even with the lock, supervision around hot water is important for young children.

2. Use Heat-Resistant Cups

Always dispense hot water into a ceramic mug or heat-resistant glass. Thin plastic cups, paper cups without a heat sleeve, and cheap glass can crack or deform under 92°C water. Keep a dedicated mug near the dispenser.

3. Don’t Overfill

Fill cups to no more than 80% capacity when dispensing hot water. A full cup of 92°C water is a burn risk if knocked or spilled. Leave room for milk or to carry safely.

4. Place the Unit Safely

Keep the dispenser on a flat, stable surface at adult bench height — not within easy reach of young children. Ensure the power cord is tucked away and not a trip hazard. Keep the unit away from the edge of benches and tables.

5. Electrical Safety

Use a grounded (earthed) power outlet. Don’t use extension cords if avoidable. Keep the power cord away from water. If the cord is damaged, stop using the unit immediately and call us on 1800 789 781.

6. Burns First Aid

If hot water is spilled on skin: run cool (not cold) water over the burn immediately for at least 20 minutes. Do not apply ice, butter, or toothpaste. Seek medical attention for any burn larger than a 20-cent coin or on the face, hands, or joints. Call 000 for serious burns.

7. Regular Maintenance Keeps It Safe

A well-maintained dispenser is a safer dispenser. Replace the filter cartridge every 6–12 months, sanitise the reservoir every 3–6 months, and check for leaks monthly. See: Water Dispenser Maintenance Tips.
