Using a Hot Water Dispenser for Baby Formula: What Parents Need to Know

June 17, 2023 2 min read

A hot water dispenser can be a genuine lifesaver for new parents — no waiting for the kettle at 3am, no guessing at temperatures. But there are a few things worth knowing before you rely on one for baby formula.

The Right Temperature for Baby Formula

Australian and WHO guidelines recommend preparing powdered infant formula with water that has been boiled and cooled to no less than 70°C. This temperature is required to kill any bacteria that may be present in the formula powder itself — not just in the water.

Our hot water dispensers heat to approximately 92°C — above the 70°C threshold. To use for formula: dispense the hot water, add the formula powder, mix, then cool the bottle quickly under cold running water or in a bowl of cold water before feeding. Never feed formula that’s still hot.

Filtration Matters for Babies

Our bottle-fed dispensers use a built-in 8-stage KDF filter cartridge that removes chlorine, heavy metals, sediment, and bacteria. For infants, this is a meaningful benefit — removing residual chlorine and heavy metals from the water used in formula is a sensible precaution.

If you’re on bore or tank water, or have older plumbing with lead pipes, consider a reverse osmosis system for the highest level of contaminant removal. See our Reverse Osmosis Guide.

Practical Tips for Using a Dispenser for Formula

  • Replace the filter cartridge every 6 months (not 12) when preparing formula for infants — err on the side of caution
  • Sanitise the reservoir every 3 months
  • Always cool the prepared formula to feeding temperature before use
  • Don’t use the room-temperature tap (if available) for formula — use freshly dispensed hot water

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a hot water dispenser safe to use for baby formula?

Yes — our dispensers heat to 92°C, above the 70°C minimum recommended for formula preparation. Always cool the prepared bottle to feeding temperature before use. Call us on 1800 789 781 for advice.

Should I use filtered water for baby formula?

Yes — filtered water removes chlorine and heavy metals, which is a sensible precaution for infants. Our 8-stage KDF filter is suitable for most Australian town water supplies. For bore or tank water, consider a reverse osmosis system.
