How Long Do Ceramic Dome Filters Last in Australia?

February 19, 2025 2 min read

A ceramic dome filter typically lasts 6–12 months in an Australian home — but water quality, usage, and maintenance all affect this. Here’s what to know.

Typical Lifespan

A ceramic dome filter in normal household use lasts 6–12 months. This assumes regular scrubbing to restore flow rate and average Australian town water quality. In hard water areas (Perth, Adelaide) or with bore/tank water, the ceramic clogs faster and may need replacing at 6 months or sooner.

What Affects Lifespan

Factor Effect on Lifespan
Hard water (Perth, Adelaide) Shorter — mineral deposits clog pores faster
Bore or tank water (high sediment) Shorter — higher sediment load
Soft town water (Sydney, Melbourne) Longer — lower mineral and sediment load
Regular scrubbing (monthly) Extends lifespan significantly
High household usage (4+ people) Shorter — more water processed

How to Extend Ceramic Dome Filter Life

Scrub the outer ceramic surface monthly with a soft brush under running water. This removes accumulated sediment and mineral deposits from the pores, restoring flow rate. Do not use soap or detergent — rinse with clean water only. Do not use abrasive scourers — they damage the ceramic surface.

Warning Signs It Needs Replacing

  • Scrubbing no longer restores flow rate — the ceramic is exhausted
  • Visible cracks in the ceramic — replace immediately; a cracked dome provides no filtration
  • Persistent cloudiness in filtered water — ceramic integrity may be compromised
  • 6–12 months have passed — replace on schedule regardless of apparent performance

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I clean and reuse a ceramic dome filter?

Yes — scrub the outer surface monthly to restore flow rate. The ceramic can be cleaned and reused until scrubbing no longer restores flow, or until it cracks. At that point, replace it. Browse our replacement ceramic dome filters.

What happens if I don’t replace my ceramic dome filter?

An exhausted or cracked ceramic dome provides no bacterial or sediment filtration — you’re drinking unfiltered water while thinking it’s filtered. Replace on schedule. Call us on 1800 789 781 if you’re unsure.
