Fluoride Water Filter Myths: What’s True and What’s Not

August 16, 2023 2 min read

There’s a lot of misinformation around fluoride water filters — from people claiming they don’t work, to others claiming fluoride at normal levels causes serious disease. Here’s a straight-talking guide to the most common myths.

Myth 1: “Fluoride water filters don’t actually work”

False. Reverse osmosis systems remove 90–99% of fluoride. Activated alumina filters (like our 97% Fluoride Reduction Ceramic Dome) remove up to 97% in gravity-fed systems. These are well-established filtration technologies with documented performance. The key is using the right technology — standard carbon and KDF filters do not remove fluoride.

Myth 2: “All water filters remove fluoride”

False — and this is the most important myth to understand. Standard activated carbon, KDF, ceramic, and sediment filters do not remove fluoride. Only reverse osmosis, activated alumina, and bone char filters remove fluoride. If fluoride removal is your goal, check the product specifications carefully. See: Which Filters Actually Remove Fluoride?

Myth 3: “Fluoride at normal levels in Australian water is dangerous”

Not supported by Australian health authorities. Australian town water is fluoridated to approximately 0.6–1.0 mg/L — a level set by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) and endorsed by the Australian Dental Association as safe and beneficial for dental health. Health problems associated with fluoride (dental fluorosis, skeletal fluorosis) occur at significantly higher concentrations than those found in Australian town water. Choosing to filter fluoride is a personal preference, not a safety necessity for most Australians.

Myth 4: “Fluoride filters are expensive and hard to install”

False for gravity systems. A gravity benchtop system with our 97% Fluoride Reduction Ceramic Dome requires no plumbing, no tools, and installs in minutes. Ongoing cost is a cartridge replacement every 6–12 months. Under-sink RO systems have a higher upfront cost and require a plumber, but are still far cheaper than buying fluoride-free bottled water long-term.

Myth 5: “Once you have a fluoride filter, you never need to maintain it”

False. Activated alumina media saturates over time and stops removing fluoride once exhausted — with no visible or taste-based warning sign. Replace cartridges every 6–12 months on schedule. Browse our replacement fluoride cartridges.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is fluoride in Australian tap water safe?

Yes — fluoride levels in Australian town water are set by the NHMRC well below levels associated with adverse health effects. Filtering fluoride is a personal choice, not a safety requirement for most households.

Which filter is best for removing fluoride in Australia?

Reverse osmosis is the most effective (90–99%). For gravity systems, our 97% Fluoride Reduction Ceramic Dome removes up to 97%. Call us on 1800 789 781 for advice.
