Reverse osmosis and carbon filtration are the two most common approaches to home water filtration in Australia. They do very different things. Here’s a plain comparison.
See our Reverse Osmosis Guide and our Benchtop Water Filters Guide.
| Contaminant | Carbon Filter | Reverse Osmosis |
|---|---|---|
| Chlorine | ✅ Yes | ✅ Yes |
| Fluoride | ❌ No | ✅ Yes (90–99%) |
| Heavy metals | ⚠️ Partial (KDF) | ✅ Yes |
| Dissolved solids (TDS) | ❌ No | ✅ Yes (90–99%) |
| Bacteria | ✅ Yes (ceramic stage) | ✅ Yes |
| Minerals (calcium, magnesium) | ✅ Retained | ❌ Removed (remineralisation stage adds back) |
Fluoride removal: The most important practical difference. Carbon filters do not remove fluoride. RO systems do. If fluoride removal is your priority, RO is the only practical option.
Minerals: RO removes all dissolved minerals, producing very pure but slightly acidic water. Most RO systems include a remineralisation stage to add minerals back. Carbon filters retain naturally occurring minerals.
Installation: Carbon benchtop filters require no plumbing. RO systems are typically under-sink and require a plumber.
Cost: Carbon filters have a lower upfront cost. RO systems cost more upfront but produce the highest quality filtered water.
Choose a carbon filter if: you want chlorine and taste improvement, you’re renting, or fluoride removal isn’t a priority. See our Benchtop Water Filters Guide.
Choose RO if: you want fluoride removal, the highest level of contaminant removal, or you’re a homeowner willing to invest in an under-sink system. See our Reverse Osmosis Guide.
No — standard activated carbon filters do not remove fluoride. For fluoride removal, you need a reverse osmosis system or an activated alumina cartridge. See our Reverse Osmosis Guide.
Yes — RO water is safe. Most RO systems include a remineralisation stage that adds calcium and magnesium back into the water. If yours doesn’t, ensure you’re getting adequate minerals from your diet. Call us on 1800 789 781 for advice.
