Most filter media exhausts gradually with no visible or taste-based warning. By the time you notice a change in taste or smell, the cartridge has been underperforming for weeks. Set a calendar reminder when you install a new cartridge and replace on schedule regardless of how the water tastes.
| Filter Type | Key Maintenance Tasks | Schedule |
|---|---|---|
| Benchtop/cooler cartridge | Replace cartridge; scrub ceramic outer shell monthly | 6–12 months |
| Under-sink filter | Replace cartridge; check O-ring; check for leaks | 6–12 months |
| RO system | Replace pre/post carbon filters; replace membrane | Filters: 6–12 months; membrane: 2–3 years |
| Shower filter | Replace cartridge | 6–12 months |
| Whole house filter | Replace sediment cartridge; replace carbon cartridge | Sediment: 3–6 months; carbon: 6–12 months |
