How to Choose a Water Filter Cartridge in Australia: What Actually Matters

June 29, 2023 3 min read

Walk into any hardware store or search online and you'll find dozens of water filter cartridges. The problem isn't finding one — it's knowing which one actually does what it claims. Here's what to look for when choosing a cartridge for your Australian home.

See our Replacement Filter Cartridges Guide for system-specific intervals, or browse our full replacement cartridge range. Also see our Benchtop Water Filters Guide.

1. Match the Cartridge to Your Contaminant

The most important question is: what are you trying to remove? Australian town water is treated and generally safe, but most people filter for chlorine taste, heavy metals from older pipes, or sediment. If you're on tank or bore water, bacteria and sediment are bigger concerns.

  • Chlorine and taste: activated carbon cartridge
  • Bacteria and cysts: ceramic cartridge (0.9 micron or finer)
  • Heavy metals (lead, copper, mercury): KDF media or reverse osmosis
  • Fluoride: reverse osmosis membrane or UltraCeram fluoride cartridge
  • Everything: multi-stage system (8-stage KDF or RO)

2. Check the Micron Rating

Micron rating tells you how fine the filtration is. The lower the number, the finer the filter:

  • 20 micron: coarse sediment only
  • 5 micron: fine sediment, some bacteria
  • 1 micron: most bacteria and cysts
  • 0.9 micron (ceramic): bacteria, Giardia, Cryptosporidium
  • 0.0001 micron (RO membrane): dissolved solids, fluoride, heavy metals

For drinking water, a ceramic stage at 0.9 micron or finer is the minimum for biological protection. See our Reverse Osmosis Guide for the highest level of filtration available.

3. Choose the Right Cartridge for Your System

Cartridges are not universal — they need to match your housing size and connection type. The most common formats in Australian homes:

  • 8-stage KDF gravity cartridge: for Awesome Water benchtop coolers and gravity-fed purifiers. Our 8-stage KDF cartridges are the most popular replacement we sell.
  • 10-inch standard cartridges: for most benchtop and under-sink single-stage housings
  • Big Blue (4.5-inch) cartridges: for whole house systems with higher flow rates. Browse our whole house replacement cartridges.
  • Swing-twist and inline cartridges: for quick-change under-sink systems. Browse our under-sink cartridges.

4. Know the Replacement Schedule

A cartridge that's past its service life doesn't just stop filtering — it can harbour bacteria and release trapped contaminants back into your water. General guide for Australian households:

  • 8-stage KDF gravity cartridge: every 6–12 months
  • Ceramic dome: every 6–12 months (clean monthly with a soft brush)
  • Carbon block: every 6–12 months
  • Sediment cartridge: every 3–6 months
  • RO membrane: every 2–3 years

Replace sooner if you notice a drop in flow rate, a return of chlorine taste, or visible sediment. See our Replacement Filter Cartridges Guide for full system-specific intervals.

5. Genuine vs Generic

Generic cartridges are widely available and often significantly cheaper. The trade-off is consistency — media quality, cartridge dimensions, and actual filtration performance vary considerably between manufacturers. For systems where the cartridge dimensions matter (like gravity-fed coolers), a poorly fitting generic can leak or bypass filtration entirely.

Genuine Awesome Water cartridges are designed specifically for our systems, with consistent media ratios and BPA-free, food-grade housings. Browse our full replacement cartridge range or call us on 1800 789 781 if you're not sure which cartridge fits your system.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know which cartridge fits my system?

Check your existing cartridge for the brand, model, and dimensions. For Awesome Water coolers and benchtop purifiers, our 8-stage KDF cartridges are the correct replacement. If you're unsure, call us on 1800 789 781.

Can I use a generic cartridge in my Awesome Water system?

Technically yes, but we recommend genuine Awesome Water cartridges for consistent fit and filtration performance. Generic cartridges vary significantly in media quality and dimensions.

What's the difference between a 7-stage and 8-stage cartridge?

Our 8-stage cartridge includes an additional mineral/alkaline stage compared to the 7-stage. Both remove chlorine, heavy metals, sediment, and bacteria. The 8-stage raises pH slightly higher and adds more trace minerals. Browse both options in our replacement cartridge range.
