Troubleshooting Common Water Filter and Cooler Issues

Most water filter and cooler issues have simple fixes. Here’s a practical troubleshooting guide for the most common problems.

1. Water Cooler Not Dispensing Water

Likely cause: empty bottle, clogged filter, or airlock in the bottle.

Fix: Check the bottle has water. If the filter is overdue for replacement, swap it out — a heavily clogged cartridge can restrict flow to zero. To clear an airlock, remove the bottle, cover the neck with your hand, invert briefly, then reseat. Browse our replacement cartridge range.

2. Water Tastes or Smells Bad

Likely cause: exhausted filter cartridge.

Fix: Replace the filter cartridge. A returning chlorine taste or smell is the clearest sign the carbon stage is exhausted. Most cartridges need replacing every 6–12 months. Don’t push past 12 months.

3. Water Cooler is Leaking

Likely cause: cracked bottle, loose tap fitting, or overfilled drip tray.

Fix: Inspect the bottle for cracks. Check all tap fittings are hand-tight. Empty the drip tray regularly. If the leak is from the base of the unit, contact us on 1800 789 781 — it may indicate an internal seal issue covered under warranty.

4. Water Cooler Making Noise

Likely cause: normal compressor cycling, or the unit is not level.

Fix: A quiet hum is normal — it’s the compressor running. Gurgling when water is dispensed is also normal. Loud rattling usually means the unit is not sitting level — adjust the feet. Persistent unusual noise warrants a call to us.

5. Water Not Cold Enough

Likely cause: unit placed in direct sunlight or near a heat source, or compressor needs time to cool.

Fix: Move the unit away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Allow 30–60 minutes after plugging in for the water to reach full chill temperature. Ensure there’s adequate ventilation around the unit.

6. Water Not Hot Enough

Likely cause: heating element needs time, or the hot tank was recently drained.

Fix: Allow 20–30 minutes after plugging in or after heavy use for the hot tank to reheat. If the water never reaches temperature, contact us on 1800 789 781.
