Maifan Stone Properties: Mineral Composition and Water Benefits

July 31, 2021 2 min read

Maifan stone is one of the mineral stages in our 8-stage KDF water filters. Here’s a detailed look at what it’s made of, what it does to water, and why it’s been used in water filtration for decades.

What Is Maifan Stone?

Maifan stone (also known as medical stone or Chinese medical stone) is a naturally occurring mineral rock composed primarily of plagioclase feldspar, hornblende, biotite, and various silicates. It has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries and is referenced in the Ming Dynasty’s Compendium of Materia Medica by herbalist Li Shizhen. It’s also widely used in Japan and South Korea, where it’s known as the “Stone of Health.”

Mineral Composition

Maifan stone contains a broad spectrum of minerals and trace elements. Key components include:

Compound Approximate % by weight
Silicon Dioxide (SiO₂) 67.63%
Aluminium Oxide (Al₂O₃) 15.70%
Potassium Oxide (K₂O) 3.36%
Sodium Oxide (Na₂O) 4.22%
Calcium Oxide (CaO) 2.66%
Magnesium Oxide (MgO) 1.24%
Iron Oxides (Fe₂O₃ / FeO) ~3.25%
Titanium Dioxide (TiO₂) 0.40%

It also contains over 70 trace elements including zinc, selenium, copper, manganese, and rare earth elements — many of which are essential for human health.

What Maifan Stone Does to Water

  • Releases beneficial minerals — calcium, magnesium, potassium, zinc, and selenium dissolve slowly into the water, improving its mineral profile
  • Adsorbs contaminants — the porous surface adsorbs heavy metal ions (including mercury and arsenic) and some organic contaminants
  • pH buffering — the amphoteric aluminium oxide content helps buffer water towards a neutral pH, reducing both excessive acidity and alkalinity
  • Bacteriostatic effect — inhibits bacterial growth within the filter media
  • Improves taste — the mineral addition gives water a cleaner, more balanced flavour

Important: maifan stone is a remineralisation and adsorption medium — not a primary filter. It works best as part of a multi-stage system alongside KDF and activated carbon stages that handle chlorine and chemical removal.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I use maifan stones in water?

Add maifan stones to a glass or ceramic vessel with pre-filtered water and allow at least 8 minutes contact time before drinking. For best results, use with water that has already had chlorine removed. See our full guide: Maifan Stone: What It Is, How It Works, and How to Use It.

How long do maifan stones last?

Typically 1–3 years depending on water quality and usage frequency. Sanitise by boiling in clean water for 20 minutes every 6 months. Replace when the stone has visibly reduced in size or mineralisation noticeably decreases.
