What's in Wollongong's tap water?

Wollongong's drinking water is supplied by Sydney Water, drawn mainly from Avon Dam in the protected Illawarra escarpment ranges and treated at the Illawarra Water Filtration Plant west of the city. The escarpment catchment is largely forested national park and protected land, with little agricultural or industrial activity, so the raw source water is relatively clean. Fitzroy Falls Dam in the Southern Highlands provides supplementary supply, and the water meets the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines.

Two things define the Illawarra's water. First, the sandstone geology of the escarpment produces soft water  typically around 40–60 mg/L of calcium carbonate — so limescale and scale buildup are far less of a problem than in hard-water cities like Adelaide or Perth. Second, the Illawarra is one of Sydney Water's shorter-network zones, so it is generally disinfected with free chlorine rather than chloramine (used in longer-network Sydney zones). Fluoride is added at around 1.0 mg/L in line with NSW Health guidelines. The taste and smell of chlorine is the main thing residents notice.

Wollongong tap water is safe to drink. Because the water is soft and the catchment is clean, the main reason people filter it is taste — removing the chlorine flavour for fresher-tasting drinking water.

Why use a filtered water cooler in Wollongong?

In the Illawarra, a filtered water cooler is mostly about taste, not scale. Since the water is already soft, the value isn't in reducing limescale but in removing the free chlorine responsible for that "pool water" taste and smell, plus any sediment picked up from pipework on the way to your tap. Filtering before you drink gives consistently fresh-tasting hot and cold water without the chlorine aftertaste — and without buying or hauling bottled water.

For Wollongong offices and homes, that means better-tasting tea, coffee and drinking water on demand, with the convenience of instant hot and chilled water in one unit.

How our 8-Stage KDF filtration works

Our coolers use an 8-stage KDF filter that treats water in layered steps, sediment, activated carbon, KDF media, and mineral stages — to reduce chlorine, sediment and taste-and-odour compounds while balancing pH. For the Illawarra's soft, chlorinated water, the carbon stages do most of the work: stripping the free chlorine taste and smell. The sediment stages capture particles from pipework, the KDF media targets heavy metals and inhibits bacterial growth, and the mineral stages give a smooth, slightly alkaline finish. Note that carbon-based filtration is designed to improve taste, odour and clarity — it is not intended to remove fluoride, which is added at controlled levels.

Because Illawarra water is naturally soft, you won't see the scale problems that wear out coolers in hard-water cities — but filtering still makes a clear difference to taste.

FAQs

  • Where does Wollongong tap water come from? Sydney Water supplies the Illawarra mainly from Avon Dam in the protected escarpment ranges, with Fitzroy Falls Dam as a supplementary source. It's treated at the Illawarra Water Filtration Plant west of the city and meets the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines.
  • Is Wollongong tap water hard or soft? Soft — typically around 40–60 mg/L of calcium carbonate, thanks to the sandstone escarpment catchment. This means limescale is rarely a problem in the Illawarra. The main reason locals filter their water is the taste of chlorine, not hardness.
  • Does Wollongong water have chlorine or chloramine? The Illawarra is generally disinfected with free chlorine, as it's one of Sydney Water's shorter-network zones (chloramine is used in longer Sydney networks). Free chlorine has a stronger taste and smell, which an activated-carbon filter removes effectively.
  • Which cooler suits a Wollongong office? Freestanding for shared spaces; plumbed-in for continuous supply without bottle handling.
  • How often do I replace the filter? Every 6–12 months, depending on usage and water quality. The Illawarra's soft water is gentle on cartridges, so they often reach the full interval. See our Replacement Filter Cartridges Guide.
