What's in Canberra's tap water?

Canberra has some of the softest, highest-quality tap water in Australia — hardness sits around 38–43 mg/L, so limescale and scale buildup are rarely a problem across the ACT. Icon Water supplies the city from protected catchments in the Brindabella Ranges: the Corin, Bendora and Cotter dams on the Cotter River, plus Googong Dam on the Queanbeyan River, with the Murrumbidgee available as a backup. These are clean, low-pressure alpine catchments with little agricultural or industrial activity, so the source water arrives in excellent condition.

Canberra's treatment is distinctive. Raw water is processed at the Mount Stromlo and Googong treatment plants, and disinfection uses a two-stage process — ultraviolet (UV) light followed by free chlorine — rather than the chloramine used in cities like Sydney and Brisbane. UV destroys microorganisms at the plant, while a small free-chlorine residual keeps the water safe through the pipe network. Lime is added to balance pH, and fluoride at around 0.8 mg/L for dental health. The water meets the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines, and the main reason people filter it is simply the residual chlorine taste.

Why use a filtered water cooler in Canberra?

In Canberra, a filtered water cooler is about taste and convenience, not fixing a water problem. Because the water is already soft and high quality, the value is in removing the residual free-chlorine taste and any sediment or trace metals picked up from household plumbing — then serving it as instant hot and cold water on demand. A simple carbon stage handles Canberra's free chlorine effectively (unlike chloramine cities, which need more specialised media).

For Canberra offices, government departments and homes, that means consistently fresh-tasting tea, coffee and drinking water, hot or chilled, in one convenient unit — without buying bottled water.

How our 8-Stage KDF filtration works

Our coolers use an 8-stage KDF filter that passes water through sediment, activated carbon, KDF media, ceramic and mineral stages to remove chlorine taste, sediment and trace metals while balancing pH. For Canberra's soft, free-chlorine-disinfected water, the activated-carbon stages do most of the work — removing the residual chlorine taste — while the sediment and ceramic stages capture particles from pipework, and the mineral stages give a smooth, slightly alkaline finish. Note that carbon-based filtration improves taste, odour and clarity; it is not intended to remove fluoride, which is added at controlled levels.

Because Canberra water is naturally soft, you won't see the scale problems that wear out coolers in hard-water cities like Adelaide or Perth — so a cooler here tends to have an easy life.

FAQs

  • Is Canberra tap water hard or soft? Soft — around 38–43 mg/L of calcium carbonate, thanks to the protected Cotter and Googong catchments in the Brindabella Ranges. This means limescale is rarely a problem in the ACT. The main reason locals filter their water is the taste of chlorine, not hardness.
  • Where does Canberra's tap water come from? Icon Water sources it from four reservoirs — Corin, Bendora and Cotter dams on the Cotter River, and Googong Dam on the Queanbeyan River — with the Murrumbidgee as backup. It's treated at the Mount Stromlo and Googong plants and meets the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines.
  • Does Canberra water have chlorine or chloramine? Canberra uses a two-stage process — UV light followed by free chlorine — rather than chloramine. Free chlorine has a noticeable taste but is removed effectively by a standard activated-carbon filter, so filtration here is simple.
  • Which cooler suits a Canberra office? Freestanding for shared spaces; plumbed-in for continuous supply without bottle handling.
  • How often do I replace the filter? Every 6–12 months. Canberra's soft water is gentle on cartridges, so they often reach the full interval. See our Replacement Filter Cartridges Guide.
