What's in the Gold Coast's tap water?

Most of the Gold Coast's drinking water comes from Hinze Dam and Little Nerang Dam in the protected hinterland catchment, treated at the Molendinar and Mudgeeraba treatment plants. The catchment around the Numinbah Valley and Springbrook Plateau is largely national park and state forest, which helps keep the source water clean. Seqwater supplies the bulk water; the City of Gold Coast distributes and monitors it across the network, and it meets the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines.

The Gold Coast's water supply has one feature that sets it apart: the Gold Coast Desalination Plant at Tugun, which turns seawater into drinking water using reverse osmosis and blends into the supply during droughts, floods, or when a treatment plant is offline for maintenance. Like the rest of the SEQ Water Grid, Gold Coast water is disinfected with chloramine (chlorine combined with ammonia) rather than free chlorine, and fluoride is added at controlled levels. Gold Coast water tends to be on the softer side, so scale is less of an issue here than in hard-water cities — the things residents notice most are the chloramine taste and smell.

Gold Coast tap water is safe to drink. The reasons people filter it are taste and odour — chloramine, plus any sediment or trace metals picked up from ageing pipework on the way to the tap.

Why use a filtered water cooler on the Gold Coast?

On the Gold Coast, a filtered water cooler is mainly about taste — removing the chloramine flavour and any sediment between the treatment plant and your glass. Because the water is relatively soft, the benefit isn't scale reduction so much as cleaner-tasting water: quality activated-carbon filtration reduces the chloramine taste and smell, while sediment stages capture particles and rust that can come from older pipes, giving you consistently fresh hot and cold water on demand.

For Gold Coast offices and homes, that means better-tasting tea, coffee and drinking water, without buying bottled water or putting up with the chloramine aftertaste.

How our 8-Stage KDF filtration works

Our coolers use an 8-stage KDF filter that treats water in layered steps, sediment, activated carbon, KDF media, and mineral stages, to reduce chloramine taste, sediment, heavy metals and improve flavour while balancing pH. The activated-carbon stages target the chloramine taste and odour; the sediment stages capture particles and rust from pipework; the KDF media targets heavy metals and inhibits bacterial growth; and the mineral stages give a smoother, slightly alkaline finish. Note that carbon-based filtration is designed to improve taste, odour and clarity — it is not intended to remove fluoride, which is added at controlled levels.

FAQs

  • Where does Gold Coast tap water come from? Mostly from Hinze Dam and Little Nerang Dam in the hinterland, treated at the Molendinar and Mudgeeraba plants. The Tugun desalination plant also blends in during droughts, floods, or treatment-plant maintenance. Seqwater supplies it and the City of Gold Coast distributes and monitors it.
  • Does Gold Coast water have chlorine or chloramine? Like all of the SEQ Water Grid, Gold Coast water is disinfected with chloramine (chlorine combined with ammonia), not free chlorine. Chloramine is more stable in the network but has a distinctive taste and is harder to filter, so a good activated-carbon filter makes a clear difference.
  • Is Gold Coast tap water hard or soft? Gold Coast water is on the softer side, so limescale and scale buildup are less of a problem than in hard-water cities like Adelaide. The main reasons locals filter their water here are the chloramine taste and any sediment picked up from pipework.
  • Which cooler suits a Gold Coast office? Freestanding for shared spaces; plumbed-in for continuous supply without bottle handling.
  • How often do I replace the filter? Every 6–12 months, depending on usage and water quality. See our Replacement Filter Cartridges Guide.
