Alkaline Water Filter Maintenance: A Practical Guide for Australian Households

September 08, 2023 2 min read

Maintaining your alkaline water filter properly ensures it keeps performing — and keeps your water quality consistent. Here’s a practical maintenance guide for Australian households.

1. Replace the Filter Cartridge on Schedule

The most important maintenance task. Replace your 8-stage KDF cartridge every 6–12 months — at 6 months in hard water areas (Perth, Adelaide) or high-usage households (4+ people). Don’t wait for a change in taste or flow rate — the mineral and carbon stages exhaust gradually with no visible warning.

2. Scrub the Ceramic Dome Monthly

The ceramic outer shell of the cartridge accumulates sediment and mineral deposits over time, reducing flow rate. Scrub the outer surface monthly with a soft brush under running water. Do not use soap or abrasive scourers. This extends cartridge life and maintains flow rate.

3. Clean the Reservoir Every 3–6 Months

Clean the lower chamber (reservoir) with a mild food-safe sanitiser every 3–6 months. Rinse thoroughly before refilling. This prevents biofilm buildup in the lower chamber — particularly important in warm Australian conditions where bacterial growth is faster.

4. Monitor pH

If you want to verify your filter is raising pH as expected, use a pH test kit or digital pH meter. A healthy 8-stage KDF system should produce water at pH 7.5–8.5. If pH drops below 7.5, the mineral stages (Maifan stones, Prill Beads) may be exhausted — replace the cartridge. Call us on 1800 789 781 if you’re unsure.

5. Check for Leaks

Inspect the connection between the cartridge and the upper chamber monthly. A small drip usually means the cartridge isn’t seated correctly — remove and reseat by hand-tightening. Do not overtighten. If leaking persists, call us on 1800 789 781.

6. Store Replacement Cartridges Correctly

Store sealed replacement cartridges in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Do not store in a garage or shed in Australian summer conditions — heat can degrade the carbon media. Cartridges have a long shelf life when stored correctly.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Issue Likely Cause Fix
Slow flow rate Clogged ceramic dome Scrub ceramic outer surface
Chlorine taste returning Exhausted carbon stage Replace cartridge immediately
pH below 7.5 Exhausted mineral stages Replace cartridge
Leak at cartridge connection Cartridge not seated correctly Remove and reseat by hand
Cloudy water New cartridge carbon fines Discard first 2 full chambers

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know when to replace my alkaline filter cartridge?

Replace every 6–12 months on schedule — don’t wait for symptoms. In hard water areas (Perth, Adelaide) or high-usage households, replace at 6 months. Browse our replacement cartridge range.

Can I clean my alkaline filter cartridge instead of replacing it?

The ceramic outer shell can be scrubbed to restore flow rate. The internal carbon, KDF, and mineral media cannot be regenerated at home — replace on schedule. Call us on 1800 789 781 if you’re unsure.
