How to Make Your Water Filter Cartridge Last Longer

July 07, 2023 2 min read

A replacement cartridge every 6–12 months is unavoidable — but there are genuine ways to get the most out of each one. Here's what actually makes a difference.

1. Use Your Filter for Drinking and Cooking Only

The more water you run through the filter, the faster it exhausts. If your benchtop or freestanding cooler is also being used to fill pet bowls, water plants, or top up the kettle, you're burning through cartridge capacity faster than necessary. Use filtered water for drinking and cooking; use tap water for everything else.

2. Clean the Ceramic Stage Monthly

The ceramic outer stage of an 8-stage KDF cartridge can be scrubbed monthly under running water to restore flow rate. Use a soft brush — no soap or chemicals. This removes the layer of blocked sediment and bacteria from the ceramic surface, extending the cartridge's effective life. See our full guide: How to Clean a Water Filter Cartridge.

3. Keep the Reservoir Clean

A dirty reservoir introduces bacteria and sediment that the cartridge then has to work harder to manage. Sanitise the reservoir every 3–6 months. See: How to Clean a Water Cooler. A clean reservoir means the cartridge is only dealing with what's in the incoming water — not accumulated contamination.

4. Store Spare Cartridges Correctly

Keep spare cartridges in their original sealed packaging, in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Heat and moisture can degrade the carbon and ceramic media before the cartridge is even installed. Don't store them under the sink near hot water pipes.

5. Replace on Schedule — Not Past It

Pushing a cartridge past its service life doesn't save money — it can cause bacteria to colonise the exhausted media, which then contaminates the reservoir and requires a full sanitisation. Replace at 6–12 months and you'll spend less time and money on remediation.

6. Use a Pre-Filter in High-Sediment Areas

If you're on bore water, tank water, or in an area with high sediment in the mains supply, a sediment pre-filter upstream of your main cartridge will significantly extend its life. The pre-filter catches the bulk sediment load; the main cartridge handles the finer contaminants. Browse our whole house cartridge range for pre-filter options.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should an 8-stage KDF cartridge last?

6–12 months under normal household use. In harder water areas (Perth, Adelaide), replace closer to 6 months. In softer water areas (Melbourne, Sydney), 12 months is usually fine. Browse our replacement cartridge range.

Can I clean and reuse my filter cartridge?

The ceramic outer stage can be gently scrubbed and rinsed to extend its life slightly. The internal carbon and KDF media cannot be regenerated — once exhausted, the cartridge must be replaced. Call us on 1800 789 781 for advice.
