Water Filter Certifications in Australia: What to Look For

August 05, 2023 2 min read

Water filter certifications tell you whether a product has been independently tested to do what it claims. Here’s what’s relevant in Australia — and what to be sceptical of.

WaterMark Certification (Australia)

WaterMark is the Australian certification scheme for plumbing and drainage products, administered by the Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB). Products that connect to the mains water supply — including whole house filter housings — should carry WaterMark certification. This confirms the product meets Australian standards for materials and construction in contact with drinking water.

Look for the WaterMark logo and licence number on the product or packaging. You can verify a WaterMark licence on the ABCB website.

AS/NZS Standards

Australian and New Zealand Standards (AS/NZS) relevant to water filtration include:

  • AS/NZS 4348: Water supply — domestic type water treatment equipment — performance requirements
  • AS/NZS 3497: Drinking water treatment units — plumbing requirements

Products certified to these standards have been tested for contaminant reduction performance and materials safety in the Australian context.

NSF/ANSI Standards (US — Context)

You’ll often see NSF/ANSI certifications (NSF 42, NSF 53, NSF 58) referenced on water filter products in Australia. These are US-based standards administered by NSF International. They are internationally recognised and provide useful performance benchmarks — but they are not the primary Australian regulatory standard. WaterMark and AS/NZS are the relevant Australian requirements.

What Certification Doesn’t Tell You

Certification confirms a product was tested under specific conditions at the time of certification. It doesn’t guarantee ongoing performance if cartridges aren’t replaced on schedule, or if the system is installed incorrectly. A certified system with an overdue cartridge provides no filtration.
