Upgrading Your Kitchen with an Alkaline Water Filter in Australia

September 02, 2023 2 min read

An alkaline water filter is one of the most practical kitchen upgrades for an Australian home — filtered, mineral-rich water on tap without the cost or waste of bottled water. Here’s what to know before you buy.

See our Benchtop Water Filters Guide or browse our alkaline water filter range.

What an Alkaline Water Filter Actually Does

An alkaline water filter raises the pH of your drinking water above 7.0 — typically to 7.5–8.5 — through the addition of minerals like calcium, magnesium, and potassium via mineral media stages (Maifan stones, Prill Beads, or similar). It also filters out chlorine, heavy metals, sediment, and bacteria through the preceding filtration stages.

The result is filtered water that tastes cleaner and smoother than standard tap water, with added trace minerals. This is the well-supported benefit. Claims about alkaline water “boosting immunity”, “neutralising free radicals”, or providing dramatic health transformations are not supported by clinical evidence — be sceptical of products making these claims.

Types of Alkaline Water Filters for Australian Kitchens

Benchtop gravity filter (most popular): Sits on the kitchen bench, no plumbing required. Our 8-stage KDF benchtop water cooler filters water through ceramic, activated carbon, KDF media, Maifan stones, and Prill Beads — removing contaminants and raising pH to 7.5–8.5. Ideal for renters and homeowners alike.

Under-sink alkaline filter: Installed under the kitchen sink, delivers filtered alkaline water from a dedicated tap. Requires a plumber for installation. See our Under Sink Water Filters Guide.

Reverse osmosis with remineralisation: Removes the most contaminants (including fluoride) then adds minerals back via a remineralisation stage. The highest quality option. See our Reverse Osmosis Guide.

What to Look For

  • Filtration stages: Look for a multi-stage system that removes chlorine, heavy metals, and bacteria before the alkaline stage
  • pH range: 7.5–8.5 is the practical target for most households
  • Cartridge availability: Ensure replacement cartridges are stocked year-round. Browse our replacement cartridge range
  • Fluoride removal: Standard alkaline filters do not remove fluoride. For fluoride removal, you need an RO system or UltraCeram cartridge. See our Reverse Osmosis Guide

Our Recommendations

Best for most Australian kitchens: Our 8-stage KDF benchtop water cooler — no plumbing, comprehensive filtration, raises pH to 7.5–8.5, cartridges available year-round.

Best for fluoride removal: Add an UltraCeram fluoride removal cartridge to your existing system, or upgrade to an RO system.

Best for mineral enhancement: Add Maifan mineral stones or magnesium Prill Beads to your existing filter system.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does an alkaline water filter remove fluoride?

Standard alkaline filters do not remove fluoride. For fluoride removal, you need a reverse osmosis system or an UltraCeram cartridge. See our Reverse Osmosis Guide or call us on 1800 789 781.

Do I need a plumber to install an alkaline water filter?

Not for a benchtop gravity filter — no plumbing required. Under-sink systems require a plumber for installation. Our benchtop coolers are fully DIY-friendly. Call us on 1800 789 781 for advice.
